I was looking everywhere for a new kitchen rug in bright, vibrant colors that matched my kitchen and I was having no luck.  And then I came across this pin on Pinterest and was inspired to make my own rug!!  I was so excited to get started because I love a good DIY project.

Diane over at In My Own Style shares an ingenious tutorial on how to make your own rug using fabric and vinyl flooring.  I immediately headed to Joann’s and picked out my fabric.  Then I went to Lowe’s to get the vinyl remnant, spray adhesive and water based polyurethane.

I loved the fact that I could pick any fabric that I wanted and I could make it myself for a fraction of the cost.  How much better can it get?

Diane gives very detailed directions in her tutorial HERE but it really is pretty simple.  I put newspaper down and did it all on my dining room table.

  • Cut your vinyl remnant to the size you want.  Mine measures 3 ft x 4 ft.
  • Spray the vinyl with spray adhesive.
  • Spread your fabric out over the vinyl and smooth out.
  • Apply two coats of polyurethane
  • Once that is dry, flip over the vinyl.  Spray more adhesive to the edges of the fabric, fold over and smooth the fabric out.  Then use duct tape to make sure it sticks to the vinyl.
  • Apply two coats of poly to the fabric edges.
  • When dry, flip over and apply a few more coats of polyurethane.  I did 3 more coats like Diane recommended.
  • The only thing I added was a rug gripper to the back so my rug didn’t slide around.  I just wanted to make sure it didn’t move around in my kitchen.

I absolutely love my new kitchen rug!!  I love the fabric.  It is so bright and cheery.  I smile every time I walk in the kitchen and look at it.  Plus it is so easy to clean.  The best part is showing it off to everyone that comes over.

If you need a new kitchen rug, I definitely recommend making your own.  I think you will be really happy with your finished product.  And I have to add that I don’t know what I would’ve done if I hadn’t found this tutorial on Pinterest!  I’d probably still be looking for a rug so thank goodness for Pinterest!!

  3. Hi! I was wondering how your rug has weathered. Is it still nice? How do you wash it? I would love a kitchen rug but am afraid I would get it too messy…

  4. I have loved this fabric for a while, but didn’t know what to do with it! I love this! Do you mind telling me how it feels under your feet, like when it is wet? Thanks!!!

  5. Just be sure you roll it and don’t bend or fold it. They will crack. I paint on the back of vinyl and then use the polyurethane. I love the idea of using fabric and the gripper on the back.

  6. I love the idea how to make your own rug. I can’t wait to start on my hallway! Where can I find the “vinyl remnant”? I am having hard time looking for it! Thanks!

  7. I am half way through this project and I think I messed up …. 🙁
I applied OIL based polyurethane, and as I was brushing it on, I could feel the adhesive dissolving under the fabric. Sure enough, the fabric is peeling right off the vinyl. I continued with the poky application and its drying now …. kinda. Did I ruin it?

  8. I am not sure if I understand what the vinyl is, is this the clear vinyl that fabric stores sell in a roll. The same one you can use as a clear tablecloth?

  9. Hey I would love to make one of these I was wondering where tom purchase the vinyl?
    Thanks,
    Clara

  10. Hey what happens once you apply the poly – does it change the feel of the fabric? I’ve never used it before.

  11. Thanks for posting and your rug turned out great! I have this linked to my rugs post as well today, nice job!

  12. Would you mind making a step by step video tutorial on youtube or a tep by step guide showing how you made this, both tutorials seem confusing to me because im a visual learner. How did you adhere the grip behing the mat and where did you buy it?

  13. Using a bright kichen rug made of vinyl fabric is a great option. Since the rug is made up of vinyl, it is highly durable and water resistant. This makes the rug maintainance free.

  14. thanks so much for sharing this idea! i am wondering how it is holding up for you? i would like to make one for our foyer, which is an area that attracts a lot of dirt and would need cleaned often~
