Tax season is upon us but before we could get our taxes done, I had to find all the paperwork that I needed.  This is where my problem began.

Tips for Organizing Paper Clutter

There is nothing I dislike more than having piles of paper on my countertops so I seem to move all the paper clutter to a bookshelf in the living room that I then hide behind cute pictures of the boys.  It’s one of those things that’s out of sight, out of mind until I need to find something.  Then I’m panicking as I’m throwing papers all over the living room; which ends up makes a huge mess and stresses me out even more.  It really is a never ending problem so I finally realized that things needed to change!

This past weekend it was freezing and snowing so I decided to take advantage of the time and organize all the paper clutter that we have in our house.

Files and Bin - Organizing Paper Clutter

File Documents in a File Bin – Go through ALL your papers.  I had piles of paper in almost every room so I gathered it all and just spread it out on the living room floor.

Organizing the Paper Clutter

I sorted it all out into different piles to see exactly what I needed to file.  Two trash bags of trash later, I was ready to create my labels and file everything in a metal file bin.  My DYMO LabelWriter® 450 Value Pack made this process a breeze!

Family Binder: Next, I created a family binder.  This is something I’ve wanted to do for awhile now.  This is where I put all our most important documents along with one copy of every bill we pay monthly so I have all the account numbers.  I also created a Password Log and a section for each family member including the dog.

Family Binder

This was a fun project because I created my own dividers with pretty scrapbook paper I already had in my craft stash.

I labeled each divider with the following labels:

  • Monthly Budget
  • Important Documents
  • Vehicle Records
  • Insurance Info.
  • Passwords – print Password Log HERE
  • Each family member

Family Command Center

Command Center – Create a command center for all your mail and paperwork coming in.  Now as soon as I go through the mail, I sort it at our command center.  I created 3 files – File, Shred, Pay.   I also placed a Taxes – 2015 file folder here to gather all our tax documents that are coming in the mail.  This will make it easy to find when we are ready to file our taxes  and it keeps everything in one place.

School Memories Binder

School Memories Binder – I love organizing with binders and this eliminated so much of the paper clutter that was taking over our house.  I created a School Memories Binder for Connor.  This is where I’m filing all his favorite school work, projects, pictures, etc.  I created the cover with Picmonkey.  My mom is always telling Connor that “Knowledge is Power so I thought that was the perfect quote for the cover.  Then I labeled plastic sleeves by grade.  Now all of his school work that comes home will go right into this binder.

Paper Clip Labels

Paper Clip Labels – Make paper clip labels with paper clips, scrapbook paper, and the DYMO LabelWriter® 450 Value Pack.  Such an easy way to keep papers organized.

DYMO LabelWriter

And finally, invest in a DYMO LabelWriter® 450 Value Pack.  This thing is AMAZING!  I was a little nervous about hooking it up because I was afraid it would take forever but I was definitely wrong.  This bad boy is super easy to install and extremely user friendly.  After installing the software, I can print custom labels in about 1 minute.   The DYMO LabelWriter® has thermal printing technology and comes with 4 LabelWriter® Label Rolls – LW Appointment Card Labels, LW Shipping Labels, LW File Folder Labels and LW Multi-Purpose Labels.  And the best part is – I don’t need to worry about sheet labels and all that mess.  The DYMO LabelWriter® prints precise labels super fast and I don’t waste any of my printer ink.  Create custom address labels, file folder and barcode labels, name badges and so much more with the 60+ label styles and layouts the software has.  Plus, you can use all the fonts you have on your computer.

  1. I have papers everywhere that I “hide” so they aren’t out, too. It’s on my to do list to get them organized, and this may be the way to do it! #client
